Hello ladies and gents. Ive been missing in action for a while. I hope all has been well.
Through the years, I have had many requests for the step by step for Waxy and I finally got around to doing one. It is a great pattern for the Great Lakes area (and elsewhere) so I thought Id post it here.
The inspiration for this fly came from watching centerpin and conventional anglers catch the snot out of steelhead, time and time again, while using live waxworms.
I have heard conflicting reports about what a waxworm actually is but have come to the believe that it is the larvae of a certain moth, Pyralidae. In the wild, these creatures live as nest parasites in bee colonies where they eat the cocoons, pollen, shed skins of bees; but, they also chew through beeswax. Fish love 'em but they will usually not see them naturally in the streams. Waxy is most effective when dead drifted under an indicator or high stick nymphed through the runs and pools.
I hope the steelhead, trout, panfish, bass, and carp fisherman enjoy
